TRAVELLING FOOD VENDOR CHINA C1920 ANTIQUE Magic Lantern Slide PHOTO SHANGHAI
TRAVELLING FOOD VENDOR CHINA C1920 ANTIQUE Magic Lantern Slide PHOTO SHANGHAI? Provenance: From the estate of William Arthur Blackburn Leach. DOB: 2nd Jan 1872. Leach was born in Norwich where he attended a local grammar school, later becoming an apprentice carpenter and engineer. In 1902 after he had qualified, he went to China where he obtained a position in the Public Works Department of the Shanghai Municipal Council. He spent his working life in Shanghai until he left in 1926. During his time in China he held interests in a Christian Mission school and helped to support street children. He seized every opportunity to visit other parts of China and took thousands of photographs. He treasured silver items and bought much to take home. He travelled home at least four times during his stay in China and these return visits were round-the-world trips in which he travelled through and visited Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Egypt and The Holy Land, the Far East, Canada and USA. On his return to the UK he lived in Northampton where he was a lay preacher and a local councillor. He gave a great many talks on his experiences in China and the many other Countries he had visited. He died in 1962. Magic lantern slides were able to be enlarged using a lantern as a projector (much like 35mm slides) and William is likely to have selected his more interesting images to use in his talks about China. Lantern slides as a photographic medium in my opionion produce one of the finest photograpic images and as a result of the way they are produced images stay well preserved compared to other photographic mediums as a result of being protected behind glass. This slide is numbered: 895. Title: ” Travelling food stall ” Given the provenance likely to have been taken in or near Shanghai. Ref L587 CAB1 S3. Our shop has over 25000. Slides in it – please take a look for similar images. THE SLIDE IS APPROXIMATELY 8.2CM X 8.2CM OR IN INCHES 3.23″ X 3.23″. Please be aware that as the slide can be photographed both sides the image may be reversed in error. We provide a bespoke packing service for all orders and for extra security high value slides as well as 3 or more slides are double boxed as standard.

RARE ANTIQUE Magic Lantern Slide BOSTON MUSEUM C1870 VICTORIAN PHOTO USA MASS. An incredibly rare image of Moses Kimballs museum. I have dated the image between 1860 – 1880 just looking at the location and people (see photo 4 – the womens dress is certainly from this period) however from research I believe the slide was not produced until the 1880’s. Boston Museum and Gallery of Fine Arts. Was a theatre, wax museum, natural history museum, zoo and art museum in 19th Centuary Boston. Established the enterprise in 1841. The Boston Museum exhibited items acquired from Ethan Allen Greenwoods former New England Museum; tableaux of wax figures; live animals; and artworks by John Singleton Copley, Gilbert Stuart, Benjamin West, Thomas Badger and others. Early live shows presented, for instance, the musical olio, consisting of solos on glass bells, and birch-bark whistling. Theatrical performances began in 1843. Through the years, notable performers included: Lawrence Barrett, Edwin Booth, John Wilkes Booth, Annie Clark, Richard Mansfield, E H Southern, Mary Ann Vincent and William Warren. An advertisement of 1850 described the museum’s key attractions. The museum is the largest, most valuable, and best arranged in the United States. It comprises no less than seven different museums, to which has been added the present year, besides the constant daily accumulation of articles, one half of the celebrated Peales Philadelphia Museum, swelling the already immense collection to upwards of half a million articles, the greatest amount of objects of interest to be found together at any one place in America; and an entirely new hall of wax statuary…. And the immense collection of birds, beasts, fish, insects and reptiles… Paintings, engravings and statuary… Family of Peruvian mummies; the duck-billed platypus… The curious half-fish, half-human Feejee Mermaid which P T Barnum later. The Museum held a recruiting office for Company D. Of the 22nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in 1861 at the start of the Civil War. Please see my shop for similar slides. Offered for sale is an exceptional Collection of Victorian Microscope slides housed in the very best R&J Beck Mahogany Cabinet. Carefully collected over a period of over 10 years, it represents the finest group of quality specimens by a range of Professional slide mounters. The contents include specimens from all areas of the natural world. From the geology that makes up our earth and all the creatures and plants that inhabit the planet, to exhibition slides that demonstrate the mounters skill, all from the heyday of this fascinating period of discovery and interest in the scientific and natural world. A Cabinet of slides of this magnitude is rarely offered for sale. The contents have been specially selected as the finest of their type, both for condition and presentation. Some slides are exceptionally rare, and many are, I consider unique. I consider this collection to be world class and is, in my experience as good as, or better than any found in an institution or most high end private collections. I cannot emphasise strongly enough how much time and effort has gone into collecting and compiling this magnificent collection.
