RARE ANTIQUE Magic Lantern Slide BOSTON MUSEUM C1870 VICTORIAN PHOTO USA MASS. An incredibly rare image of Moses Kimballs museum. I have dated the image between 1860 – 1880 just looking at the location and people (see photo 4 – the womens dress is certainly from this period) however from research I believe the slide was not produced until the 1880’s. Boston Museum and Gallery of Fine Arts. Was a theatre, wax museum, natural history museum, zoo and art museum in 19th Centuary Boston. Established the enterprise in 1841. The Boston Museum exhibited items acquired from Ethan Allen Greenwoods former New England Museum; tableaux of wax figures; live animals; and artworks by John Singleton Copley, Gilbert Stuart, Benjamin West, Thomas Badger and others. Early live shows presented, for instance, the musical olio, consisting of solos on glass bells, and birch-bark whistling. Theatrical performances began in 1843. Through the years, notable performers included: Lawrence Barrett, Edwin Booth, John Wilkes Booth, Annie Clark, Richard Mansfield, E H Southern, Mary Ann Vincent and William Warren. An advertisement of 1850 described the museum’s key attractions. The museum is the largest, most valuable, and best arranged in the United States. It comprises no less than seven different museums, to which has been added the present year, besides the constant daily accumulation of articles, one half of the celebrated Peales Philadelphia Museum, swelling the already immense collection to upwards of half a million articles, the greatest amount of objects of interest to be found together at any one place in America; and an entirely new hall of wax statuary…. And the immense collection of birds, beasts, fish, insects and reptiles… Paintings, engravings and statuary… Family of Peruvian mummies; the duck-billed platypus… The curious half-fish, half-human Feejee Mermaid which P T Barnum later. Publisher is unknown, but this image was likely pirated. The image is from around 1870, at the Regent’s Park zoo, and the card appears to be from the 1890s. This is a stereoview (also known as a stereograph or stereoscope card). It was one of the first forms of 3D photography. The images were captured with a special stereoscopic camera, which had two lenses – simulating the view of our left and right eyes. The two, nearly identical pictures were then mounted next to each other (most commonly on a piece of cardstock, glued on as photographs or printed as lithographs). The image could then be seen in three dimensions when viewed through a device known as a stereoscope, stereopticon, and/or televiewer. Standard-size stereograph, measuring about 3.5 x 7 inches. All of my items are protected in archival sleeves and packaged in rigged cardboard. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Photographic Images\Stereoviews & Stereoscopes”. The seller is “calamityphoto” and is located in this country: US. This item can be shipped worldwide.

They were most popular during the 1860s and 1870s, but are still made today. This is known as a 1/6 plate tintype, since it measures about 2.25 x 3.5 inches. Photographer and publisher are unknown.
