Crusader Period Iron Signet Ring, Jerusalem Find, Circa 12th-13th Century AD
Crusader Period Iron Signet Ring, Jerusalem Find, Circa 12th-13th Century AD. Certified Authentic Ancient Artifact. Culture: Crusader (Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem). Type: Administrative Signet Ring. Size: US Ring Size 7. Provenance: Jerusalem find; Private collection; acquired by me in 2024. A rugged and historically evocative Crusader-period iron signet ring, recovered from the Jerusalem region. The ring features a circular, raised bezel and a sturdy hoop that expands toward the shoulders. While the high iron content has resulted in heavy archaeological oxidation, the profile is characteristic of the functional, everyday signets used by the Frankish settler population, merchant classes, or lower-tier military personnel in the Latin East. In the 12th and 13th centuries, iron was a common material for personal signets among those who required a durable tool for sealing wax on trade manifests and local correspondence. Despite the surface corrosion, the ring’s robust construction reflects the militarized and practical nature of life in the Crusader states. Authentication Notes (Ancient Surface and Tool Assessment). Iron Mineralization: The surface exhibits a dense, multi-layered “concretion” of iron oxides and compacted soil. This type of heavy, stable oxidation only occurs after centuries of anaerobic burial in the specific mineral conditions found in and around the Old City of Jerusalem. Forged Construction: The hoop and bezel show the slight irregularities of manual blacksmithing. Unlike modern cast iron, ancient wrought iron was hammered into shape, leading to the distinct “organic” profile seen in the side view. Morphological Wear: The interior of the hoop shows significant thinning at the base, a result of decades of continuous wear against the finger in antiquity before it was lost or buried. Bezel Geometry: The raised, circular platform is a classic high-medieval form, designed to press a deep, clear impression into hot beeswax or lead bullion seals. Cultural and Artistic Context. Following the First Crusade, Jerusalem became a hub of Western European administration in the heart of the Levant. While the elite wore gold and silver, the vast majority of the “Franks” (as the Crusader settlers were known) relied on iron for their functional jewelry. An iron signet was a mark of a “free man”-someone with the legal right to sign documents and engage in contract-based trade. Finding such a piece in Jerusalem connects it directly to the bustling administrative and military life of the Holy City during the Middle Ages. Jerusalem in the Time of the Crusades, p. 155-160 (On material culture and daily tools). The iron is heavily oxidized but remains structurally sound. The concretion is stable and provides a direct physical link to its long burial in the Jerusalem soil.

Phoenician Bronze Horse Mount with Inlay, Hellenistic Period 300-100BC. Authentic Ancient Artifact – Guaranteed This object is a genuine Phoenician-period bronze horse mount or applique dating to the Hellenistic era, circa 3rd-1st century BC. The piece displays surviving inlaid decoration and reflects Levantine craftsmanship under strong Greek cultural influence. Details Material: Bronze with mineral inlay traces Date: circa 300-100BC Culture: Phoenician / Hellenistic Greek sphere Form: Horse-shaped mount or applique Manufacture: Cast with applied inlay Length: 40 mm Condition: Complete with ancient wear and stable patina. Overview This finely cast bronze mount depicts a stylized horse in motion, rendered in a distinctly Phoenician manner while incorporating Hellenistic naturalism in posture and proportion. The elongated body, raised head, and arched neck reflect the symbolic importance of the horse in Phoenician and broader Mediterranean culture, where it represented status, mobility, and martial prestige. Traces of colored inlay remain visible on the body, a notable feature associated with Phoenician metalwork, which frequently employed inlaid materials to enhance visual impact. Such horse figures were used as decorative mounts on harness equipment, belts, chariots, or ceremonial objects. During the Hellenistic period, Phoenician artisans continued local traditions while adapting Greek stylistic elements, resulting in hybrid objects such as this example. Authenticity Check The mount is cast in bronze using period-consistent techniques and exhibits a cohesive ancient patina with areas of mineral accretion. The inlay remnants are consistent with ancient decorative practices and show natural degradation rather than modern application. Surface wear, corrosion texture, and casting details align with authentic Phoenician and Hellenistic metalwork. No modern repairs or alterations are observed. Comparable Examples Comparable Phoenician bronze horse mounts and appliques with inlay are documented from Levantine coastal sites and Hellenistic-period contexts. Similar examples appear in museum collections and archaeological publications relating to Phoenician decorative metal objects and equestrian symbolism. Further Reading Markoe, G. Greek Art in the Hellenistic Period. The Phoenicians and the West. Complete as recovered, with expected surface wear, partial inlay loss, and stable patina consistent with age and use. Structurally sound, with no modern restoration.

Islamic Bronze Pilgrimage Ring Madina Devotional Type Mamluk Ottoman Period. Authenticity Notice Guaranteed authentic historic artifact. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from Affordable Ancients. Details Period: Islamic Date: c. 14th-18th century AD Culture: Mamluk to early Ottoman period Material: Bronze Type: Pilgrimage / devotional ring Ring Size: 6 Bezel: Plain oval devotional bezel Condition: Intact with historic wear. Overview Authentic Islamic bronze pilgrimage ring associated with Madina al-Munawwara devotional traditions, dating to the Mamluk-Ottoman transitional period. Rings of this type were worn by pilgrims, travelers, and devotees as personal objects of blessing, remembrance, and spiritual protection rather than as formal signet seals. The emphasis of such rings lies in association and intention, not inscription clarity. During the Mamluk and Ottoman periods, pilgrimage objects-including rings, pendants, beads, and tokens-were commonly acquired during journeys to major holy cities and retained as lifelong devotional items. These objects often show heavy smoothing, surface abrasion, and softened edges consistent with repeated touch and long-term wear. Authenticity Check The ring exhibits correct bronze composition, simple cast form, worn oval bezel, natural surface oxidation, and patina consistent with genuine late medieval to early modern Islamic pilgrimage jewelry. The construction and wear patterns align with known devotional rings rather than later decorative reproductions. Comparable Examples Comparable Islamic pilgrimage rings of plain or lightly marked type are documented in museum and private collections focusing on devotional material culture of the late medieval and early Ottoman Islamic world. Super fun lot of three period advertising, probably from a deco period night club, possibly even prohibition era. All three are antique hand drawn and painted original illustrations, a bit soiled from age, but a wonderful subject and a great decorative lot that you won’t find again. Close ups with the light in photos are to show process like brush strokes. Please use photos and zoom feature for most accurate condition. Tag on back from Boston framer, likely from Boston area. Two measure about 15.75″ by 12.75″, larger is 18″ by 14.5″. Super fun decor for a restaurant, night Blount, home bar room, nice enough to be deceptive about anywhere. Please get them approved before purchasing. Any questions must be answered before the sale. Almost everything I offer is old and has likely spent time in a basement or garage. I do my best to get back to everyone in a timely fashion. If you don’t hear a response within 48 hours please ask question again! Also, make sure to check my other listings for more great vintage finds- I will certainly do my best to work with you if you are purchasing multiple items. I love old things so I’m always hunting through auctions, flea markets & yard sales for the ultimate score. I often buyout entire estates, which is why I have such varied offerings. I love bringing the old and unique back to market & I’m constantly adding inventory so please check back often. You never know what I’ll find next!
