A striking and substantial matched pair of tall Victorian-style English brass candlesticks, featuring beautifully executed open barley-twist stems and impressive 18½-inch height. These are exceptionally substantial pieces, weighing approximately 4 pounds EACH – approximately 8 pounds for the pair. Each candlestick features a dramatic open spiral/barley-twist column rising from a broad, heavy circular brass base. Above the twist is a traditional drip pan supporting a tall, flared candle socket. The proportions are elegant and architectural, giving the pair considerable presence whether displayed on a mantel, dining table, sideboard or console. The undersides reveal the unfinished, textured construction of the heavy bases, consistent with traditional cast-brass manufacture, while the visible surfaces have developed the warm golden appearance expected of aged brass. Pair of 2 matching candlesticks. Period/style: Victorian, late 19th century. Material: Solid/heavy cast brass. Design: Open barley-twist / spiral columns. Weight: Approximately 4 lbs each / 8 lbs combined. Broad circular weighted bases. Removable-style traditional candle sconces and drip pans. No maker’s mark observed. Very good antique condition with age-appropriate surface wear, patina, oxidation, small marks and variations in the brass consistent with pieces of this age. The undersides retain considerably more oxidation and aged surface coloration than the polished exterior surfaces. Please review all photographs carefully, as they are considered an important part of the condition description. The brass has not been aggressively restored, allowing the next owner to preserve the existing character or polish the pair further according to preference. At Ann-tique Alley, we seek distinctive vintage and antique pieces chosen for their craftsmanship, history and decorative presence.
