Antique Victorian Cast Metal Oval Frame With Original Portrait Photograph
A Stunning Piece of History. Offered is a beautiful and authentic late Victorian to early Edwardian oval tabletop display frame. This decorative cast metal piece retains its original studio portrait photograph of a young woman, capturing a classic aesthetic that fits perfectly with antique décor, gothic cottage, farmhouse, or dark academia styling. Frame and Photograph Details. This frame displays exceptionally well and features its original backing board. The cast metal construction-likely spelter or painted cast iron-is marked with mold number 2235. The portrait is an original period gelatin silver studio photograph showing a young woman in formal attire with an elegant pendant necklace and floral corsage, perfectly consistent with the Edwardian era. Because the unit retains its original assembly, it offers a level of authenticity that is increasingly sought after by collectors and interior designers. Frame: Very good antique condition with light surface wear and a beautiful, age-appropriate patina. Portrait: Original period photo with classic tonal contrast; shows normal age-related surface marks. Backing: Original backing board is present and shows minor age-related toning and wear. Structure: The entire assembly is sturdy and displays beautifully. Dimensions: Approximately 10 ½ ” x 8″. Weight: 1 lb 15.7 oz. This is a rare, complete survivor from the turn of the 20th century, ready to serve as a distinctive focal point in your home or collection.

LaPalm is proud to present: Victorian “Mourning, Scam, Spirit” Photograph. I have not taken the frame apart, removed the backing, or attempted any restoration. A Victorian “Ghost” picture used by an actual 1800’s medium. This picture is believed to be some type of trick photography. According to the Estate owner, this picture was used in a Medium Shop as proof of the existence of spirits. The story is that Madame Jude would tell her clients this was proof of her ability to communicate with the supernatural and spirits. “Madame Jude” (sometimes believed to read as Judge/Jude depending on age and fading), with reference believed to connect to an old studio in Waltham, New York. Because of the age, condition, and the fact that I have intentionally not dismantled the frame, I cannot fully verify that attribution with certainty, but the provenance story stayed with the piece and adds to its intrigue. There are no signs of any water or moisture damage that would explain the creepy image. The portrait itself is what makes this truly unforgettable. Centered within the dramatic black mourning-style presentation is an oval image of a standing woman dressed in full-length formal attire, surrounded by a strange pale halo-like outline that gives the unmistakable appearance of early spirit photography or memorial apparition portraiture. The figure almost appears to emerge from mist or ether, creating the exact eerie visual effect collectors of Victorian mourning and ghost photography search for. Whether this was intended as mourning photography, memorial portraiture, spirit photography, or simply an unusual early photographic technique, or just a scam the visual result is stunning. It strongly resembles late 1800s to early 1900s remembrance photography and carries that unmistakable solemn Victorian atmosphere associated with funeral portraiture and memorial keepsakes. The ornate frame adds major display appeal. It features decorative antique brass-tone corner mounts with a rich black backing that creates a dramatic presentation. Please note: the decorative metal trim/tins on the frame are very thin, delicate, and fragile due to age. They remain intact, but should be handled carefully. I have deliberately chosen not to remove or disturb the frame because I wanted to preserve it exactly as it was found. Approximate overall framed size is around 10 inches, making it an ideal cabinet display piece, curiosity shelf centerpiece, or standout item for any Victorian oddities collection. This piece appeals to serious collectors of. Funeral and memorial antiques. Ghost and apparition photography. Cabinet of curiosities displays. Because I have not opened the frame, I cannot guarantee exact photographic process, original studio attribution, or definitive identification of the subject, and I prefer to present it honestly rather than overstate certainty. What I can say is that it is one of the most visually striking mourning-style portraits I have encountered, and the Madame Jude provenance story only deepens its mystery. This is not an ordinary antique portrait-it is a true conversation piece. Please review all photos carefully, as they are considered part of the description. An exceptional Victorian mourning portrait with ghostly presence, preserved exactly as found.

Roman Terracotta Portrait Bust Septimius Severus 200AD. Item Object: Miniature terracotta portrait head / bust fragment Culture: Roman Imperial Date: c. 193-211AD (reign of Septimius Severus) Material: Terracotta (fired clay) Type: Small-scale portrait appliqué / figurine fragment Size: Approx. 15 mm Provenance: Eastern Roman Empire, Near Eastern production (old collection). Description This miniature terracotta portrait fragment represents a Roman imperial male, consistent in scale, fabric, and facial treatment with small provincial terracotta portraits of the Severan period. Despite surface wear, the heavy jawline, broad facial proportions, and surviving beard texture align closely with known portrait conventions of Septimius Severus, founder of the Severan dynasty. Such small terracotta portraits were produced widely in the eastern provinces and served domestic, devotional, or commemorative functions. Unlike large marble or bronze imperial portraits, these clay examples were affordable objects intended for private households, shrines, or local civic spaces. The flattened reverse and compact scale suggest it was either mounted or set into a niche rather than free-standing. Septimius Severus was particularly prominent in eastern provinces, and his image circulated extensively in Egypt, Syria, and Judaea, making terracotta portrait fragments of his likeness well-attested archaeologically. The firing, clay composition, and surface abrasion are consistent with Roman imperial terracotta production rather than later medieval or modern manufacture. Facial mass preserved with visible beard texture and worn surface detail. Expected chips and abrasion from burial and age. Authenticity Guaranteed authentic Roman Imperial terracotta artifact, circa Severan period. Comes with lifetime authenticity guarantee from Affordable Ancients.
