African Antique Handcrafted Copper Plates from 1953
North African (Libya) Copper Art Plate Set from 1953. The hand crafting of these pieces is amazing! They were never used for serving. They were hung as wall art. They are in like new condition! The copper may be alloyed with another metal, such as tin. That would account for the lack of oxidation. The last picture displays the only sign of oxidation, which is nearly non-existent. The large plate measures 19.5 in diameter. The two smaller plates measure 9 and 1/8 in diameter. The two smaller plates have a copper wire that is soldered on the back for hanging. The larger plate has a copper sleeve to put a wire through for hanging. The second last picture has the artist’s stamp on it. This picture may be hard to view. It says Fauzi Naas, Tripoli. Please view pictures for condition. A great addition to anyone’s collection of African artwork or anyone that collects handcrafted plates or artwork. Reasonable offers will be considered.

My mother worked as a manager at a very popular retirement community home for 20+ years and my mother had the opportunity to meet many people from all over the world here. Many elderly people have the most fascinating stories about their journeys and adventures throughout their lives and one lady in particular traveled all over the world collecting art pieces such as these two statues and gifted them to my mother in the late 1980s. They were super old even back then which was over 30 years ago. No telling how old these statues are but certainly antique. And no longer made this way due to the endangerment of certain woods, dark like ebony heavy solid dense high quality wood was used here on the statues, could possibly be rosewood but because of the age it has darkened considerably. Both are a set and made to be the same size and style, as well as made from the same type of wood by the same artist. African Tribal Art Carved statue tribal BRASS Hogon crown, Dogon spiritual leader-28/21.2 CM. The Dogon people live in the central plateau region of Mali, south of the Niger River in West Africa. Heavily involved in the slave trade, the French had established strong presence on the West African coast as early as 1659. Their port was in St. Louis, or present-day Senegal. African mask antiques, large African mask Dan Zapkei or Gunye ge mask-34/19.5 CM. Among the most emblematic African masks, this sculpture stood out among the eleven types of dan masks (Fisher and Himmelheber) thanks to its circularly hollowed out eyes to allow better vision. These masks called gunye ge “racing masks”, with an oval face and a slightly concave center, were produced among the northern Dan and intended to participate in racing events. The zapkei intervene in order to prevent the spread of domestic fires during the dry seasons. Armed with a wand, they threaten reckless women and confiscate an object as a fine.
