A barefoot boy playing the transverse flute, head tipped sideways into the instrument, the wide-brimmed hat pushed back off the brow. The flute is a separate carved element with the finger holes drilled and the fingers individually placed over them. The hair breaks out beneath the hat in thick carved locks across the forehead. The waistcoat carries a row of carved buttons and buttonholes, the shirt sleeves roll back at the cuff. A pair of boots hangs from a strap at his hip – laces, soles and heels all worked – slung over the shoulder on a carved cross-belt. The trouser legs are cut off ragged at the knee. The toes are separated, the weight on the leading foot. The back is fully worked. The hat brim is carved on its underside, the hair resolves beneath it, the cross-belt runs over the shoulder blade and down to the hanging boots, which are complete from behind with their eyelets and heels. The waistcoat seam and the trouser folds continue around. The rock base is faceted on every face. This is natural, unpainted wood with a light stain and wax finish. Natural wood does not forgive. There is no paint here to carry the eye past a hesitant cut – every transition between planes is visible. What you see is exactly what the carver did. The tradition of Alpine master carving at this level is disappearing. The studios that still produce work of this quality are becoming fewer every year – and what they do produce commands increasingly significant prices. Height: 360 mm / 14. Subject: Barefoot boy flautist with wide-brimmed hat, boots slung from the hip – fully worked in the round. Period: 20th century. Material: Hand-carved wood. Finish: Natural, hand-stained and waxed. Mount: Freestanding on integral rock base. Condition: Very good – please view all photos. Questions answered personally within 24-48 hours. Con gusto le atendemos en su idioma. Niño flautista descalzo tallado a mano en madera natural, siglo XX. Flauta travesera independiente, sombrero de ala ancha, botas colgadas de la cadera. Bulto redondo completo, acabado encerado a mano. Kirsten Jaxt, JAXT · Tradition.

Very cool certificate of service for a Civil War veteran holding the grade of musician in the Indiana infantry, discharged after three years for disability. It has been folded six times. Ephemera comes with wear commensurate to age, including, potentially, age stains, tanning, chipping, rubbing, edge wear, dings, fraying, stray marks, minor old book odor, and the like. What you see is what you get.
