This grandfather clock is a part of my parents’ estate. The information i provide is what I’ve researched. The clock is 78″ at its highest point; 23″ wide at its widest point (at the base feet). There is a stamp with the initials “HWN”. My research shows this was made by Hans Winterhalder, Neustadt, Black Forest. The other side of the stamp has “Original Harvina”. A fine Scottish clock with a fancy mahogany case and brass dial around 230 years old. Runs and strikes perfectly but there is no calendar function (not uncommon). The maker is Robert Knox of Beith, listed in my book of makers. Good feet, old wavy glass, impressive in person. Measures 92″ x 22″ x 10. I have a local (to me) shipper that does good work and I can refer him to you for a quote. I sell tall case clocks quite often but I must say this is one of the highest quality grandfather clocks I have offered for sale in some time. If you are familiar with antique clocks the name J. Elliott and also Winterhalder & Hofmeier are probably names you recognize. This combines both companies in one truly fine quality piece. This is a signed Elliott quartered oak quartersawn oak quarter-chiming tall case clock, circa 1895. The case with swan’s neck hood or bonnet with freestanding fluted tapered columns flanking the composite brass dial with applied Arabic numerals, cast brass engraved applied spandrels. With the traditional moon’s phase in the arch and maker’s plaque reading “Elliott, ” full-length beveled glass waist door and wreath decorated base, resting on two carved paw front feet, eight-day, three-train movement with chimes on four gongs, regulated by a brass-faced pendulum and three associated weights. A high quality signed Winterhalder & Hofmeier movement with exceptional sound. W & H were considered the finest clockmakers in the Victorian era. They were based in several towns in Germanys Black Forest region. The company was established in 1810 by Thomas Winterhalder in Friedenweiler, southern Germany. W&H made hall, wall and mantel clocks. A 1909 catalog of Grimshaw, Baxter and JJ Elliott Ltd. (fine English clock firm) shows two examples of superb W&H bracket clocks imported by Grimshaw. Clock is in excellent condition with original finish and very nice patina. Movement is all original and of finest quality. As with all our clocks, piece has been cleaned and is currently operating correctly. A word about condition. Those of you who have. I will try to note anything of significance in the description. The unusual, dark chip-carved oak case is stylistically a bit of a holdover from the previous century. The case has more of a 17th century look, not only by material and decoration but because of the slim waist and comparatively narrow hood and face. The working eight-day weight-driven movement is original to the case and strikes a bell on the hour. There is a functional calendar dial and a seconds bit as well. Fortunately the lovely old case still retains the rich black patina that only a couple hundred years can impart. An interesting unmodified transitional element is the curious carved crown treatment on the hood which seems to foreshadow the “broken arch” pediment which started appearing about 1750. This fine grandfather clock measures 7’9″ tall and is 20″ wide at the hood. Just big enough to be authoritative but not imposing. It will fit in a modern 8′ ceiling house without any alterations. The movement has been recently overhauled and it keeps good time on one winding a week.
