This uncommon antique cast iron apothecary or pharmacy mortar and pestle with a heat base is a unique and functional piece from the mid to late 1800’s. From a Pennsylvania estate of a collector who sought early pharmaceutical items. This item would have been used in the preparation of medicinal remedies in traditional apothecaries. With its unique base designed to fit into the opening of a wood burning stovetop, heat would be used to prepare certain medicines that were to be liquified. Made of durable cast iron, it is sturdy enough to crush herbs and spices for various purposes. The heat base allows for the concoction of recipes that require heating of ingredients. All 4 jar bodies and 2 of the lids are in good condition for age, although 1 of the jars have some chips to the base edge. 2 of the lids have unfortunately been damaged and glued. However, these could be potentially repaired professional, which should add value to the items. There is also some general wear and marks to the colour / glaze and some additional incidental chips. In spite of the above, they are beautiful, rare and historical items, which will presumably will only be used for display, so restoration of the 2 lids, is not essential. 26.5cm high with lid, 15cm wide.
