Description : A 19thC Stoneware Meat Market Merchant Jar with Cobalt Stenciled Advertising, 1-Gallon capacity, Allegheny County, Western Pennsylvania origin, c. Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with eased shoulder and slightly flared rim with integrated inner ledge for a lid (not present). Multi-line Cobalt-Stenciled Advertising on body reads: DAUB & SHULZNER / GROCERY / & / MEAT MARKET / 204 SMITHFIELD ST. Horizontal freehand cobalt squiggles and brushed stripe decorations above and below the merchant information. Condition : Very Good+ overall with attractive form and desirable stenciled Western Penna merchant decoration. Imperfections are noted below. Rim with wear and a small scar on the inside edge, in-the-making (see close-up, photo #8). Inner ledge has wear where a lid would rest, including a few small nicks. Body has a professionally restored hairline that extends into the base, as shown(see close-up, photo #12). Base shows moderate wear, soiling, etc. It has not been cleaned. Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections noted for complete descriptive accuracy. See photos for complete details and and please consider them as part of the description. Measures 10H x 6W overall. The inner and outer rim diameters are 4-3/4 and 5-1/2, respectively. Weighs 5.4 lbs.
