Description : A 19thC Stoneware Whiskey Jug with Cobalt Stencil Maker Advertising, 1-Gallon capacity, Allegheny County, Western Pennsylvania origin, c. Wheel-thrown, tall cylindrical form with eased shoulder, tooled spout and applied strap handle. Multi-line Cobalt-Stenciled Advertising on body reads: MCKEOWN / THOMPSON & Co / WHOLESALE / DRUGGISTS / PITTS. Surrounded by a Federal/Union Shield and other embellishments. Horizontal freehand cobalt squiggle decoration on the front shoulder. Condition : Very Good overall with attractive form and desirable stenciled Western Penna merchant decoration. Imperfections are noted below. Upper rim with expected wear including a shallow chip, as shown. The handle was reattached at some point; there is some touchup noted at both terminals. A small stone ping with associated surface radials noted on the shoulder near the upper handle terminal (see close-up, photos #4 & #12).
