Design & Condition Note:This piece features the original permanently molded interior reservoir with its built-in crescent aperture and pen rest. Please note that the separate, small rotating lid/cap that originally sat inside the opening is not present. The base is in excellent antique condition with no chips, cracks, or restorations. It is a phenomenal standalone example of a rare early glaze. The Patent & Date: Features a crisp, stamped “PATENT” mark. Separately, the “1900” year date stamp (showing the “00” clearly, with the “19” partially nestled right under the kiln stilt spur scar) is visible on the base. This verifies a first-year production batch tracking back to William Howson Taylor’s original 1900 design filing. Kiln Marks: Retains the three original factory stilt/spur scars on the base ring from its historical firing. ? Color & Glaze AnalysisOfficial Glaze Family: This piece features a premium “Mauve Lustre” reduction glaze, highly celebrated by English Arts & Crafts collectors. The Palette: The glaze exhibits a stunning, mottled blend of deep rose pink, soft lavender, and rich heather tones. Along the raised concentric ring ridges, the glaze thins beautifully, pooling into subtle blue and violet undertones. The Lustre Finish: It retains a brilliant, glassy sheen with a delicate, iridescent metallic shift when rotated under natural daylight. Unique Kiln Character: Due to William Howson Taylor’s volatile, oxygen-starved firing techniques, the color transitions are completely unpredictable and organic. No two pieces came out of the kiln looking identical. Texture & Crazing: The surface displays fine, honest, age-appropriate glaze crazing (fine hairline lines under the glaze). This is a perfectly normal hallmark of 120-year-old earthenware and proves the glaze is completely original and unrestored.
