VINTAGE 18 3/4 d VINTAGE NAVAJO BLACK FAMILY INDIAN PICTORIAL WEDDING BASKET

EXTRA NICE LARGE PICTORIAL EXAMPLE. BASKETS BEING LABELED AS WEDDING TRAYS, NAVAJO BASKETS ETC. THE GREAT MAJORITY OF THESE are NOT what they portend to be. THIS ONE IS A REAL one attributed to a famous family of Navajo weavers that is very well made, and sturdy compared to others we just mentioned above. It has the classic star pattern with twelve points as wel las two large pictorial representations of what APPEARS TO BE RAINBOW GIRL AND RAINBOW MAN. It is made of sumac and dyed sumac on a three rod willow coiled foundation with a nice herringbone rim. These are typically made by the San Juan Paiutes who sell them to the Navajo who use them in various “sings” and other religious / social rites. The shaman is then paid with the baskets. He then takes them to the local trading post and sells them to procure his wages for services rendered and the trading post gets them out to the collectible market. This one is one of the few that are actually Navajo made! A nice authentic example. This will stand out in the display space of any collection from advanced through museum grade. Made of sumac and juncus with a bundle foundation, diagonal folded end stitches, and coiling counter clockwise with an abbreviated rattlesnake design.
