An absolutely stunning example of a first-pattern US Army M-1938 Mackinaw or Jeep Coat, complete with original belt, and in period size 36R, (please see measurements below). This piece has been issued and worn, but is otherwise in outstanding, museum condition. There are no issues or faults to report at all – there are no moth holes or grazing to be found anywhere on the coat, no fraying to back collar or cuff edges, no rips or tears, and all urea buttons, metal belt buckle and laurel leaf throat latch fastenings firmly sewn or anchored in place. This is a finely tailored example, with a neat shoulder cut and elegant curve to the sleeves. The interior nomenclature label is in mint condition, and identifies the maker as the Hillsdale Manufacturing Company and the date of manufacture as August 25th, 1941. The coat is reassuringly heavy – made in a sturdy cotton duck canvas exterior and lined/faced with a thick olive-drab wool melton – and is hence extremely warm. The cut is a little generous, as such military outer garments were cut larger to accommodate multiple layers underneath. Period Size 36 Regular. Sleeve length, from shoulder seam to cuff. Arm length, from centre back neck, along shoulder, down arm to end of cuff. Original first-pattern Mackinaws in such good condition as this are becoming increasingly hard to find now. As such, this coat is perfect for collection, display, reference or re-enactment, but otherwise represents a classic, practical and exceptionally stylish Winter coat – perfect wear for this time of year.
