An excellent clean and nice Yavapai / Apache basket made of willow and devil’s claw on a three rod willow foundation, it coils counter clockwise and has a sturdy “ticked” rim od willow and devil’s claw and a “start “made of devil’s claw as well as a nice snowflake variant design accented with several other design elements. Antique / Vintage Hopi Coiled Polychrome Basket C. 1920s To 1940s

Old Hopi Polychrome Coil Basket – 1920s – 1940s. This basket is nicely woven – a tight, even weave without damage. The first photo shows the front. The second one shows the back. The basket’s design shows a striking star pattern in red, yellow and black on the creamy willow background. It is in super condition but obviously old, with mellow colors (strong but not bright). See photos for details of design and condition. There’s a loop for hanging. The basket is about 11 inches in diameter. The wicker basket had a Museum of Northern Arizona tag with the date of 1936. This is of similar vintage. Please check out the other two Hopi baskets I’ve listed. I’m of an age where I’ve got to start thinking about where my collections of baskets, kachinas, rugs, Zuni fetishes, pottery and other Native American art will go. EXTRA NICE LARGE PICTORIAL EXAMPLE. BASKETS BEING LABELED AS WEDDING TRAYS, NAVAJO BASKETS ETC. THE GREAT MAJORITY OF THESE are NOT what they portend to be. THIS ONE IS A REAL one attributed to a famous family of Navajo weavers that is very well made, and sturdy compared to others we just mentioned above. It has the classic star pattern with twelve points as wel las two large pictorial representations of what APPEARS TO BE RAINBOW GIRL AND RAINBOW MAN. It is made of sumac and dyed sumac on a three rod willow coiled foundation with a nice herringbone rim. These are typically made by the San Juan Paiutes who sell them to the Navajo who use them in various “sings” and other religious / social rites. The shaman is then paid with the baskets. He then takes them to the local trading post and sells them to procure his wages for services rendered and the trading post gets them out to the collectible market. This one is one of the few that are actually Navajo made! A nice authentic example. This will stand out in the display space of any collection from advanced through museum grade. AN EXTRA clean basket made by the Cupeno Indians of San Diego county in southern California. Looks to be from the Warner Springs area as per some of the coloring on the juncus used. Made of sumac and juncus with a bundle foundation, diagonal folded end stitches, and coiling counter clockwise with an abbreviated rattlesnake design. Fabulous old basket from the days before there were even cities in so cal. And worthy of the best of collections and it has a LOW PRICE too! NICE SIZE, CONDITION, AND AGE. Antique Borana Chocho Basket. Milk Jug. Woven Fibers Ethiopia, East Africa

Collected by naturalist and philanthropist Eli Weiss in the 1980’s. 9.5″ tall x 6″ diameter. Borana Chocho (milk container) woven from plant fibers and sealed with animal fat. Used to store and serve milk to guests at special occasions, such as weddings and feasts. After use, the container is cleansed with charcoal. This operation is called’qoraasuu’ and gives the milk a rich fragrance and distinctive taste. The inner surface is black, dense and aromatic. The Borana people of Ethiopia are semi-nomadic pastoralist herders belonging to the Oromo ethnic group. The word’Borana’ refers to the people, their language and translated as’friend’ or’kind person’. Representing the Eli Weiss Collection of African Art.
