ANTIQUE c1900’s LARGE COPPER CAULDRON POT KETTLE APPLE BUTTER HANDCRAFTED WITH DOVETAIL CONSTUCTION RARE. We Are Pleased To Offer This Very Large 22 Antique c. Apple Butter Copper Cauldron With Dovetailed Construction and Cast Iron Handle with Stand. I believe this is of Pennsylvania Dutch origin, and was used for making Apple Butter. Antiques Roadshow had one identical to this. I did the approximate volume math calculation and it indicates 17.5 gallons, but that is approximate. The cauldron has not been cleaned since I have had it and does not look like it has been in quite some time. The cauldron is handcrafted and the copper is dovetailed together. Kettle is in excellent condition with expected wear considering the age with no serious damage, holes or repairs and does not leak. 40 pounds It has a lot of dents, dings, and scratches from use as one would expect from a piece of this age. The visible cast iron is in good shape. It does not have a maker’s mark that I could find. Size is 22-1/2 diameter x 16 tall/deep. Apple butter was a popular way of using apples in colonial America, and well into the 19th century. There is no dairy butter involved in the product; the term butter refers only to the thick, soft consistency, and apple butters used as a spread for breads. Typically seasoned with cinnamon, cloves and other spices, apple butter is usually spread on bread, used as a side dish, an ingredient in baked goods, or as a condiment. Apple butter is also mixed with vinegar while cooking to provide a small amount of tartness to the usually sweet apple butter. The Pennsylvania Dutch often include apple butter as part of their traditional seven sweets and seven sours dinner table array.
