African mask antiques, large African mask Mask Wood Kiiappak, Ammassalimiu -4272
African mask antiques, large African mask Mask Wood Kiiappak, Ammassalimiut Inuit-28.8/16.7 CM. Mask In the style of the Ammassalik region, Greenland Wood This mask illustrates the rare corpus of ancient masks from Ammassalik – an isolated region of South-East Greenland – collected by a handful of Danish and then French explorers between the end of the 19th century and the 1930s. This mask evokes a grimacing and asymmetrical face. The prominence of almond-shaped eyes with pierced pupils is accentuated by the contour of the brow bone and by the furrows of deeply engraved tattoos, initiatory witnesses that once adorned the faces of women. The torsion of the forms operated by the artist, particularly marked in the nose and the distended mouth, refers to the need for the angakoq (the shaman) to be unrecognizable to the spirits in order to avoid any revenge. Freed largely from the black lamp that once covered its entire surface, the mask comes to life in the brown iridescence of the wood in which it was carved. SIZE OF THE MASK. 28.8/16.7 CM.
