Antique Borana Chocho Basket. Milk Jug. Woven Fibers Ethiopia, East Africa

Collected by naturalist and philanthropist Eli Weiss in the 1980’s. 9.5″ tall x 6″ diameter. Borana Chocho (milk container) woven from plant fibers and sealed with animal fat. Used to store and serve milk to guests at special occasions, such as weddings and feasts. After use, the container is cleansed with charcoal. This operation is called’qoraasuu’ and gives the milk a rich fragrance and distinctive taste. The inner surface is black, dense and aromatic. The Borana people of Ethiopia are semi-nomadic pastoralist herders belonging to the Oromo ethnic group. The word’Borana’ refers to the people, their language and translated as’friend’ or’kind person’. Representing the Eli Weiss Collection of African Art. The condition is fair to good. Has places showing the foundation. No holes or splits. Some of my photos show highlights due to the silky type wools. Has it’s original edges both sides.
