Antique German Silver Grapes Kugel Christmas Ornament
This authentic silver kugel glass Christmas ornament was made in Germany in the late 1800s. Rather than the standard round ball, it’s in the harder to find, uncommon oval grape cluster form, measuring 3-1/4 inches long by a little over 2 inches wide. The kugel has loss of the inner mercury silvering, causing a whitish coloring with the top shoulder having some transparency. The glass has no damage and I don’t see any bubbles in the heavy glass. The brass cap is the baroque 5 swirl with balls style. It has some verdigris but the cap is tight with no sliding. See my other listings for hundreds of antique and vintage Christmas items. Almost all my items are antique or vintage and come from a variety of sources. I cannot guarantee that any item is from a smoke-free or pet-free home. International customers are always welcome. The item “Antique German Silver Grapes Kugel Christmas Ornament” is in sale since Sunday, December 2, 2012. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Holiday & Seasonal\Christmas\ Vintage (Pre-1946)\Ornaments”. The seller is “copper-maven” and is located in Roy, Utah. This item can be shipped worldwide.

Stunning Rare Antique German Black Forest Gk Bahnhausle Railroad Cuckoo Clock
We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally large number of music boxes and other very nice collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an absolutely breathtaking antique cuckoo clock that was produced about 120 years ago in the Black Forest of Germany by Gebruder Kuner and marketed under their G. It is referred to as a Bahnhausle (Train House) clock or Railroad clock since it was the German railroads who initially commissioned their local manufacturers to create a common design for use in their railroad stations around the 1890’s. The clock was so popular that a few were made for households around the world. This clock is one of the finest I’ve ever seen and it still works quite well here. It is an impressive size too measuring about 17 1/2″ high (from the tip of the leaves on the upper frame to the bottom of the finial on the bottom and not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6 1/2″ or so at its deepest point, and about 13 across the top. The clock is carved from cured and aged Linden wood that is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. It has a beautiful mahogany finish and features deeply carved fancy fret work hanging from the roof eaves on either side of the case, fancy round finials on the lower frame, an escutcheon on the left eave, another in the middle, and one missing on the right. There is a fancy square carving on the left side of the lower frame and on the right too along with two fancy wooden finials as well. The case is adorned with some of the nicest carvings I’ve seen in ages and 15 deeply carved wooden grape leaves and clusters of grapes near the bottom, both sides, and on the top as well. There is also a large, carved wooden grape leaf on the custom-designed wooden pendulum too. The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features easy to read Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy hands to point out the time. The numbers are the old style and nailed on to the dial, not glued on. There is a hinged wooden door on either side of the case. These are secured with a metal latch and open easily to allow access to the clock movement should any adjustments ever become necessary from this angle. The clock has a fitted wood back and is secured with a metal latch. The door easily removes to allow access to an early style of a weight driven movement bearing the G. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall wooden bellow whistle tubes are in good shape and the trapezoid tops look and sound good but a bit soft. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful wooden bird with flapping wings opens the small fancy wooden door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding coiled chime inside the case and when the cuckoo activity is finished, the bird retreats back inside the clock, closing the door behind him. The bird reappears at the top of each hour and correctly cuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before going back inside the clock; fascinating! The clock works quite well here, cuckoos as it should, and keeps good time too. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we do not know the service history though the movement does show signs of having been maintained over the years. Nonetheless, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock makes the journey to its new home. We always advise our clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve this classic clock and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a large carved grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. I’ve looked the clock over fairly well and noted only modest wear. I did see that one of the finial mounts on the bottom left has a break to it and the leaf on the very top is missing. There is a large chip on the wooden pendulum and hard to see evidence of an old repair here and there but still, it is absolutely gorgeous on display! This clock is one of the finest examples of Black Forest craftsmanship I have seen in a very long time. No matter where you display it in your home or office, it will get noticed for its uniqueness, high quality, and just Wow! You won’t find another quite like it! If you like this item and I’m sure you do, then I know you’ll love the other items. Check back frequently since we’re listing a lot of antique/vintage items as time allows! We’d be glad to send more pictures if available; just ask! My wife and I have been accumulating lots of nice antiques and other collectors items over the years. He enlisted his brother Xaver, a cabinetmaker then living in America, to acquire the assembly-line machinery for making clock parts. 1866 the first clocks followed. But there is good evidence that as far back as 1869 the 5 pointed star with a J was used although not registered until 1882. The company further expanded over years merging with other well-known German clockmakers including Lenzkirch, Thomas Haller and Gustav Becker. There is a large, fancy fret work hanging from the roof eaves on either side of the case, fancy round finials on the lower frame, and two fancy wooden finials as well. The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features easy to read Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy hands to point out the time. The numbers are the old style and nailed on to the dial, not glued on. The top is a separate carving and is not held in place; it’s just sitting there. You may wish to attach it more permanently… That’s up to you. There is a hinged wooden door on either side of the case. These are secured with a metal latch and open easily to allow access to the clock movement should any adjustments ever become necessary from this angle. The clock has a fitted wood back and is secured with a metal latch. I believe the back is a replacement door and there is a mostly intact label on it that has an “American Cuckoo Clock” name on it along with operating instructions. The door easily removes to allow access to an early style of a weight driven movement. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall wooden bellow whistle tubes are in good shape and the tops look and sound good too.
