An antique Putnam “Lightning” Fruit or Canning Jar with glass lid and wire closure, American, ca. Crude, blown Quart in attractive shade of Pale Olive Amber; factory ground lip. Embossed: TRADE MARK / LIGHTNING on body. Base is embossed: PUTNAM / 83. Retains correct “3-date” glass Lid. Color Note : The glass color depicted in the photos is accurate. I would classify this Jar as pale Yellow/Amber with strong Olive tones. The lid is quite special with shades of pale Green Apple and Olive (see close-ups). There are shallow flakes and roughness on the factory ground lip, as shown. A few air inclusions noted; no open bursts. Fine color and whittled character throughout. Beware of the numerous reproductions out there; this jar guaranteed old and authentic. Displays brilliantly in a sunlit sill or window shelf; this Lightning Jar really glows in the morning/afternoon light! Highly-appropriate for any collection.
