This is an object which floats in the space between the seen and unseen world.. The hard, living conditions of this region (especially back at the turn of the century) were unforgiving. These types of “shield masks” that were never intended to be held, worn or otherwise were strategically placed to protect the family house, water springs, bridges, and other strategic points in the life around the local community by the local shamans. This mountain region tends to be inhabited by different ethnic groups and is a melting pot that would include influences of nearby cultures including Indians (India), but is prevalently Buddhist. Knowing the true difficulties of properly saving, storing, and cherishing an artifact like this one, i have opted to attach a tasteful copper wire on the reverse (easily bent into shape) and two galvanized hammer-tacks.
