An antique Putnam “Lightning” Fruit or Canning Jar with glass lid and wire closure, American, ca. Crude, blown Quart in attractive shade of very pale Yellowish Amber; factory ground lip. Embossed: TRADE MARK / LIGHTNING on body. Base is embossed: PUTNAM / 42. Retains correct “3-date” glass Lid. Color Note: The glass color depicted in the photos is accurate. I would call this either a pale Honey Amber or strong Yellow Amber. The lid is one shade darker than the jar, as shown. The factory ground lip has a shallow flake (close-up, photo #12) and typical roughness. There are many tiny seed bubbles, as shown; no cracks, no open bursts. Fine color and whittled character throughout. Beware of the numerous reproductions out there; this jar guaranteed old and authentic! Displays brilliantly in a sunlit sill or window shelf ; this jar really glows in certain light! Highly-appropriate for any collection.
