1889 FARRINGDON ORDINARY RATIONAL PATTERN high wheel bicycle Made by ELLIS & CO. This style high wheel bicycle is of the “rational pattern” meaning it has a larger rear wheel. It was produced by the same ELLIS & CO. That made the FACILE high wheel safety both of which shared the same larger 22 diameter rear wheel size that made this machine easier rolling and a joy for the rider who experienced less of the rear wheel drag of a smaller diameter wheel found on most high wheel bicycles. ABINGDON ball bearing steering head and neck. Tangential spoke pattern wheels. Hollow handle bars with 3 1/2 drop. One handle grip remaining. Like the FACILE it has double row ball bearings on each side of the front hub. Ball bearings to the rear hub and pedals (one pedal missing). Slotted adjustable throw pedal crank arms. Pan saddle is clamped onto backbone and was probably used for racing. Weight of bicycle is lighter than comparable high wheel bicycles of the era.. Extremely rare and hard to find surviving example of an antique bicycle made before last century.
