Breathtaking Rare Antique German Black Forest Bahnhausle Railroad Cuckoo Clock
We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally large number of music boxes and other very nice collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an absolutely breathtaking antique cuckoo clock that was produced about 120 years ago in the Black Forest of Germany. It is referred to as a Bahnhausle (Train House) clock or Railroad clock since it was the German railroads who initially commissioned their local manufacturers to create a common design for use in their railroad stations around the 1890’s. The clock was so popular that a few were made for households around the world. This clock is one of the finest I’ve ever seen and it still works quite well here. It is an impressive size too measuring about 20 1/2″ high (from the tip of the leaves on the upper frame to the bottom of the finial on the bottom and not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6″ or so at its deepest point, and about 14 1/2 across the top. The clock is carved from cured and aged Linden wood that is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. It has a beautiful mahogany finish and features gorgeous inlays all over the front. There is a large, fancy fret work hanging from the roof eaves on either side of the case, fancy round finials on the lower frame, and two fancy wooden finials as well. The case is adorned with some of the fanciest carvings I’ve seen in ages and fifteen deeply carved wooden grape leaves and clusters of grapes near the bottom. The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features easy to read Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy hands to point out the time. The numbers are the old style and nailed on to the dial, not glued on. The top is a separate carving and is not held in place; it’s just sitting there. You may wish to attach it more permanently… That’s up to you. There is a hinged wooden door on either side of the case. These are secured with a metal latch and open easily to allow access to the clock movement should any adjustments ever become necessary from this angle. The clock has a fitted wood back and is secured with a metal latch. I believe the back is a replacement door and there is a mostly intact label on it that has an “American Cuckoo Clock” name on it along with operating instructions. The door easily removes to allow access to an early style of a weight driven movement. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall wooden bellow whistle tubes are in good shape and the tops look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful wooden bird with flapping wings opens the small fancy wooden door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding coiled chime inside the case and when the cuckoo activity is finished, the bird retreats back inside the clock, closing the door behind him. The bird reappears at the top of each hour and correctly cuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before going back inside the clock; fascinating! The clock works quite well here, cuckoos as it should, and keeps good time too. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we do not know the service history though the movement does show signs of having been maintained over the years. Nonetheless, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock makes the journey to its new home. We always advise our clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve this classic clock and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a large carved grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. I’ve looked the clock over fairly well and didn’t see any damage or missing parts. I think the upper frame may be a replacement but if it is, it is a good one. This clock is one of the finest examples of Black Forest craftsmanship I have seen in a very long time. It doesn’t matter where you display it in your home or office, it will get noticed for its uniqueness, high quality, and just Wow! You won’t find another quite like it! If you like this item and I’m sure you do, then I know you’ll love the other items. Check back frequently since we’re listing a lot of antique/vintage items as time allows! We’d be glad to send more pictures if available; just ask! My wife and I have been accumulating lots of nice antiques and other collectors items over the years. But now is a good time to start clearing out the things we no longer wish to keep. We do all that we can to accurately describe each item to the best of our ability. Day following the close of sale. Large Early Antique German Black Forest Finely Carved Cuckoo Clock Phillip Haas
Here is a large antique. Carved German Black Forest cuckoo clock in excellent running condition. Complete, with good bellows and excellent action of the cuckoo as shown in video. Unusually large and heavy weights power cast brass movement with good cuckoo action. Measures 18 tall, plus weights and pendulum. Very nice finish on finely detailed carvings, heavy brass chains, original Phillip Haas & Son set up label, and nicely painted cuckoo bird with jointed wings all make this a fine collectors clock. Missing minute hand but otherwise complete. Ready to hang on wall and enjoy. With mild age related wear. Please note: this clock has continued running but the cuckoo has stopped for some reason. Now it only comes out when the hands are advanced. This may be a simple adjustment or two.
