Antique Victorian figural porcelain tobacco jar / tea caddy / humidor featuring a seated woman holding a teacup with a side tray and teapot. Colorful hand-painted details include a purple bodice, pale green floral skirt, blue ribbon, molded chair back, and figural accessories. “120” on bottom of top piece. “2513 9″ on the bottom of base. This style is comparable to a circa 1880 “Tobacco jar” example on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington. Measures approximately 8.5 tall. Condition: Antique preowned condition with age-related wear. Surface wear present, especially around the rim, chair, hair, and high points. Some wear to exposed edges and underside. Please review photos carefully for condition and exact measurements. Antique CARTE DE VISITE (CDV) Photograph. Subject: Tapada limeña means Liman fem. Covered one was the denomination used at the time of the Viceroyalty of Peru and the first years of the Republic to designate the women in Lima who covered their heads and faces with comfortable silk mantones [es], revealing just one eye. Its use began in the 16th century and it spread until well into the 19th century, that is, its use lasted for three centuries and was not only limited to the “City of the Kings”, but also to other important cities in the region. In Lima, the custom remained until well into the Republic, when it was relegated by French fashions. 4″ x 2.5″. CDV is in good antique condition with some light wear. My mother worked as a manager at a very popular retirement community home for 20+ years and my mother had the opportunity to meet many people from all over the world here. Many elderly people have the most fascinating stories about their journeys and adventures throughout their lives and one lady in particular traveled all over the world collecting art pieces such as these two statues and gifted them to my mother in the late 1980s. They were super old even back then which was over 30 years ago. No telling how old these statues are but certainly antique. And no longer made this way due to the endangerment of certain woods, dark like ebony heavy solid dense high quality wood was used here on the statues, could possibly be rosewood but because of the age it has darkened considerably. Both are a set and made to be the same size and style, as well as made from the same type of wood by the same artist.
