This uncommon antique cast iron apothecary or pharmacy mortar and pestle with a heat base is a unique and functional piece from the mid to late 1800’s. From a Pennsylvania estate of a collector who sought early pharmaceutical items. This item would have been used in the preparation of medicinal remedies in traditional apothecaries. With its unique base designed to fit into the opening of a wood burning stovetop, heat would be used to prepare certain medicines that were to be liquified. Made of durable cast iron, it is sturdy enough to crush herbs and spices for various purposes. The heat base allows for the concoction of recipes that require heating of ingredients. The level has been a part of my collection which I now have to break up. It is a gem: the contrast between the Mahogany and brass is beautiful. Perfectly useable but a great collectible. There are minor dings and scratches but otherwise the level is in very good condition for a 100+ year old tool that was used. The Mahogany has no chips, cracks or stains. Brass has no damage other than minor scratches. The 2 vials are original, working and accurate; slightly dirty. There are no repairs or replacements! Length is 18 inches.
