This is a pretty nice clock in good antique condition. Cuckoo clocks are beautiful examples of old world craftsmanship but should at least to me, be considered artful objects and not necessarily accurate. The clock runs and cucks for me now but will need to be carefully managed if acquired. Collectors will know this. The wood carving is excellent. About 17 inches deep not counting the pendulum. THE TOP ON THE OTHER HAND , HAS NUMEROUS REPAIRS AND NEEDS TO BE RESTORED PROFESSIONALLY. THE CUCKOO DOORS AND WOOD BIRDS ARE ORIGINAL ALSO. Round wooden dial with Roman numerals, cuckoo aperture, 8-day carved oak and pine mantel clock of Black Forest type, circa 1900, with architectural gothic case, the eight. Day two-train fusee movement with. Twin bellows and cuckoo automaton. The German movement has wooden plates complete with original pendulum and a Key provided. The case is free from woodworm with original patina and finish, missing the cuckoo’s door and rear gong/hammer. Up for sale we have an antique Johann Baptiste Beha wall cuckoo clock circa 1875. Measures 21.5″ H and 16″ W at roof. I pack with care. Only replacements are the whistles and possibly cuckoo door. The whistles are plastic so I have included a pair of very old whistles which can be installed. They are seen in one of the final photos. In a Beha catalog of this period I believe the clock is either model 206 or 303. The cuckoo bird itself is in great shape, moving mouth and wings on striking. There is some faded writing in pencil on the backboard with what looks like the year 1876. The pendulum on this clock is gorgeous. Beautiful Victorian cuckoo clock with lovely carved wood detailing. Free standing mantelpiece / shelf clock (not for wall hanging). Stamped on the brass mechanism is’G. 32′, indicating it is a Gordian Hettich Sohn which is one of the smaller Black Forest manufacturers founded in 1836 although as it is GHS it is post-1880. Clockwork and cuckoo mechanims Iin full working order including sound via two air bellows. 8-day winding basis i. Needs to be wound once a week. The cuckoo comes out every half hour, it cuckoos once on the half hour and for the number corresponding to the hour. The only issues to note are relatively minor: a very small amount of the white detailing in some places has fallen off around the winder holes and the number 5 (V). Also the handle or knob to pull the back cover off is no longer there but could be replaced, although the back has 2 latches on the top and groove fitting at the bottom so a handle to pull the back off is not really necessary. This is a excellent find of a breathtaking, very rare, large, Bahnhausle clock that was produced in the Black Forest of Germany about 140 years ago by Gordian Hettich and Son G. , one of the original clock makers in this region of the world. This one, however, is the first I’ve ever seen with a high quality music box that plays two separate tunes and activates during the cuckoo cycle… The clock is quite large and carved entirely of cured and aged Linden wood which is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. The clock is made to look like an ornately carved, heavily detailed grape vineyard featuring ten grape leaves and vines with a dark mahogany finish! There are fancy carvings under the roof eaves and beautiful wood inlays at the top right, down each side, and across the bottom too. There are wooden finials on the bottom sides and on each down inlay at the bottom as well. The case has hinged wooden doors on each side of the case and are secured with a metal latch. The doors open easily to allow access to the clock movement for any adjustments that may be needed from this angle. The winding key for the Swiss music box is located within the hinged door on the right. The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and matching fancy hands to point out the time; I think the hands are made of bone. And most of the numbers on the dial are individually nailed to the dial and two look to made of wood. The wooden back is secured with two latches and removes to allow access to the old style, weight driven, mechanical movement produced by Hettich and bearing his signature logo initials, G. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall wooden bellow or sound tubes are intact and the tops are the old trapazoid variety; look and sound good too. At the bottom of each hour, the fancy wooden door above the dial opens and a colorful wooden bird with flapping wings appears in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral gong inside the case before retreating back inside the clock, closing the door behind him. The music box does work quite well when wound and plays two gorgeous, long version tunes. It’s supposed to stop when the tune is finished but mostly keeps playing until it winds down in a minute or two. Undoubtedly needs an adjustment or cycle spring which is quite easy to repair. The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, cuckoos as it should, and the music is wonderful too! Keep in mind that this is an old clock and we don’t know the service history so it is possible that some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. We always recommend to our clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will turn a classic like this one into a family heirloom in years to come. I’ve looked the clock over fairly well and note a few repairs that were made to the trim and wood dial over the years and an inlay at the top left that’s missing, and the roof pieces are missing as well. The finials look to be replacements but they look nice and frankly, overall the clock is absolutely gorgeous on display! It is a very impressive clock and equally impressive in size measuring about 16 1/2″ high (not counting the weights or pendulum), about 7 1/2″ at its deepest point, and about 13 across the top. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, an adjustable metal pendulum with a wooden bob, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. This clock is a collection all by itself and is certain to attract a great deal of attention from guests in your home, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a beautiful and very rare antique Black Forest, musical timepiece.
