Pretty Pair of 19th Century Antique Staffordshire Dogs Greyhounds Whippets on Cobalt Bases. 4 inches. Lovely condition. Condition: Excellent given age. Staffordshire potters in England starting in mid-19th century and often depicting Spaniels and other popular breeds such as Poodles, Greyhounds/Whippets, and Dalmatians. After Queen Victoria married Prince Albert in 1840, the family grew to include several dogs, but none were more popular than her favorite pet and constant companion, Dash, a King Charles Spaniel. This sparked a love for this particular breed. Early production Victorian Staffordshire dogs (1840s-1860s) are distinct from later productions (1870s-turn of the century) primarily in manufacturing techniques, quality of decoration, and overall craftsmanship. The transition from more rustic. Handmade pieces to factory produced models marks the most significant differences. In the second half of the 20th century an appreciation for English country and aristocratic themes grew in popularity, sparking a love for related antiques and collectibles. No where was this more evident than in the collection of antique Victorian Staffordshire dogs. It became increasingly common to find Staffordshire dogs for sale in prestigious galleries, antique shops and auctions, and once again these lovely comforters became a go-to piece for homes across the social spectrum. This is a striking antique cobalt blue art glass vase attributed to Moser, richly decorated with hand-applied gold gilding in geometric and stylized scrollwork patterns. The vase features a faceted paneled body that rises to a wide flared rim and rests on a shaped foot, all highlighted with extensive gold detailing. The deep cobalt glass combined with the heavy gilding is characteristic of Moser’s work from the late 19th to early 20th century and shows the fine craftsmanship the company was known for. Moser pieces of this quality and bold presence are highly collectible and make a dramatic statement in any antique glass collection. Description : A 19thC Stoneware Meat Market Merchant Jar with Cobalt Stenciled Advertising, 1-Gallon capacity, Allegheny County, Western Pennsylvania origin, c. Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with eased shoulder and slightly flared rim with integrated inner ledge for a lid (not present). Multi-line Cobalt-Stenciled Advertising on body reads: DAUB & SHULZNER / GROCERY / & / MEAT MARKET / 204 SMITHFIELD ST. Horizontal freehand cobalt squiggles and brushed stripe decorations above and below the merchant information. Condition : Very Good+ overall with attractive form and desirable stenciled Western Penna merchant decoration. Imperfections are noted below. Rim with wear and a small scar on the inside edge, in-the-making (see close-up, photo #8). Inner ledge has wear where a lid would rest, including a few small nicks. Body has a professionally restored hairline that extends into the base, as shown(see close-up, photo #12). Base shows moderate wear, soiling, etc. It has not been cleaned. Wheel-thrown, slightly bulbous form with rounded shoulder, double-tiered spout and applied strap handle. Multi-line Cobalt-Stenciled Advertising on body reads: EDWARD ODONNELL. / WHOLESALE LIQUOR / DEALER / 1372 / SECOND AVE. Horizontal freehand cobalt squiggle decoration above and wide, brushed cobalt stripe at the base. Condition : Very Good overall with attractive form and desirable stenciled Western Penna merchant decoration. Imperfections are noted below. Upper rim with expected wear on the upper edge. The handle has been repaired and reattached at some point, as shown. Shoulder has one shallow chip and three in-the-making stack marks (the lighter oval areas). There is a faint, surface-only hairline extending up from the heel (see close-up, photo #11). Base with typical wear, soiling, etc. Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections noted for complete descriptive accuracy. Note: Jug was photographed outdoors in natural light; expect a shade darker gray indoors. The cobalt stencil is very crisp and bold! Sparton has the reputation of making some of the most collectible mirror radios, and this model 557 is no exception. The dimensions of this radio are 18 L X 8.75 H X 8 deep. This is the same size as the model 558 cabinet. This radio has been thoroughly cleaned and is ready for your display shelf. You simple remove it from the professionally packed package and your work is over. The cabinet has great display quality. Olid with original Crystalline finish. Front/left mirror panels are original and show. Modest signs of aging. The top mirror panel has been re-silvered. Chrome has been re-plated. 3 set screw knobs are original. Cabinet hardware is all original; and. Grille Cloth- Original with minor fraying. Shows relatively recent electronic work. But does not receive any reception. Added was what appears to be a universal input jack for modern sources of music. Original to the radio. Speaker cone completely intact; and. New cloth bound cord w/vintage plug head. The person that owned it before me bought it at a bottle show in NYC back in 1986. And had it for over 30 years. The bottle is in great shape. The casting imperfection in the bottom can be felt with a fingernail but in no way allows air/liquid in or out of the bottle, it is not a crack! Please let me know if you want any more pics posted. This is the middle of the three sizes. From my understanding there’s only about 100 total of all three sizes in existence.
