Rare Antique 1920's Phonolamp Model C Victor Victrola Columbia Edison Phonograph
We are very pleased to offer a beautifully restored, antique, circa 1920 Phonolamp (with original, matching pedestal). A clever amalgamation of both design and function. This whimsical hybrid (an operable combination of Phonograph and Lamp) integrates the practicality and convenience of acoustics and lighting into a single apparatus – the Phonolamp. The company continued production of the Phonolamp until the early 1920’s. An economic downturn resulting from the Great Depression, in tandem with the public’s burgeoning preference, changing demands, and overwhelming need for radio technology, were ultimately the variables that contributed to the Phonolamp’s demise. These unusual, often garish, “Roaring Twenties” machines rarely come up for sale, but when they do, it is easy to see why they are so highly prized. A stark contrast to our generation’s definition of so-called “durable” goods, this Phonolamp’s astonishing 100 years of unremitting service is an obvious testament to the superior quality, exceptional craftsmanship, and sheer ingenuity, that went into producing (as a whole) these rather sophisticated, yet practical devices. And even now, a century later, it is apparent why Phonolamps are still recognized and appreciated for their innovative, aesthetic, and technological merits. In addition to being quite rare, this Phonolamp is complete, is working, and is in very good condition. This vintage, floor-model, 52-pound “curiosity” consists of three parts – the machine (with horn), the pedestal, and the shade, all of which have been carefully and professionally restored to their original specifications. This item was built to “outlast, ” as evidenced by its construction – using ferrous and non-ferrous metals (brass, steel sheet metal, and galvanized tin). Completed in the original French Bronze or Roman Gold finish, this ornate, monumental 67 (Total Height) marvel epitomizes the opulence, unbridled creativity, and robust fashion of the 1910’s and 1920’s. The cylindrical cabinet/body of this phonograph is heavily decorated in the Baroque-manner with embossed, scrolled foliage and 7 floral applications. The phonograph portion 17″ (Diameter) x 30″ (Height) is driven by its original THORPE UNIVERSAL ELECTRIC MOTOR with COMPENSATOR, which runs on either direct or alternating currents. The motor has been meticulously cleaned and completely rebuilt (see photo). The Thorpe motor works sufficiently, as all wires, worn/damaged parts, and ten-foot cord have been replaced with authentic, period-correct parts. The cabinet’s interior houses its original, (mostly intact) green felt-covered, 12 (Diameter) disc-turntable which accommodates 7, 10, and 12-inch 78 RPM records. Turntable’s speed can easily be regulated by adjusting a separate control knob (located inner, front). Phonolamp is also equipped with its original decagonal, “best grade” SUPREME reproducer (or sound box) – specially adapted for the Phonolamp. The reproducer is in excellent condition. Affixed to the tone arm (also tonearm) is a black tag with the following information: U. 55217 – PHONOLAMP – SERIAL NO. 1089 – MODEL NO. Attached to the inside of one of its two doors are three (3) original needle reservoirs (2 “holding cups” and 1 dispenser). They have been flawlessly re-chromed and polished… Two, 1920’s, Victor Victrola, Tungs-Tone Stylus (Gran Sonoridad & Sonido Fuerte) needle tins (with steel needles) accompany this machine. Interior illuminates by way of a working, single socket, pull-chain light. Ornate cabinet body serves as the base for the vertical, external, flared horn, as well as a two-light cluster head (both of which are hidden within the lampshade). The lampshade 10″ to 23″ (Diameter) x 17 (Height) is original to this machine, and has been completely (and impeccably) restored. Shade’s decorative metal frame is divided into 6 sections (each of which bears an applied floral medallion). Frame has been relined with new, mushroom pleated, off-white linen. Sixty detailed floral and fruit festoons adorn the bottom fringed circumference of the shade – which supports 60 beaded tassels. Tassels are comprised of strands of champagne-colored, faceted “jewels” that alternate with strings of metallic beads and golden pom-poms. Original ball finial accompanies shade, as well. The hexagonal pedestal is absolutely magnificent. It is tapered and measures 35-1/2″ (Height) x 17″ (Diameter). Flat panels and round base are generously decorated with 9 floral applications. “Plateau” is stamp-impressed with the initials – A O B. All in all, this gorgeous, investment-grade Phonolamp has been well preserved, and is ready for display and/or use. This remarkably rare machine is also one hundred (100) years old! Suffice to say, some imperfections are to be expected. Despite some minor issues (in the broad scope of things), I would not hesitate to say that, while there is always some room for cosmetic and mechanical improvements, in all likelihood, there are few examples (if any) that are currently being offered on the market, that are this clean. It may, however, need an occasional prod to initiate movement; At times, during play, a low spot on turntable may inconsistently skim the turntable base (or motorboard), creating a sporadic rub sound. Obviously, this machine would likely benefit from some additional adjustments in order to be perfect, but I elect to defer that endeavor to the subsequent owner. Here is your opportunity to acquire, admire, and prominently display an extremely desirable, 1920, floor-model Phonolamp… Which is certainly worthy of any collection! I intend on posting more photos, in addition to some videos, (perhaps within the body of my description) – once I learn how to do so. There should be no surprises regarding product. The Phonolamp is in the exact condition as shown in photos and exactly as stated in the description. Whichever is safest and most cost efficient. We take great care in describing each item.
