Lovely used ethnographic mask from the Island of Java (Javanese) Indonesia. More precisely this is from Lombok (an Indonesian island like Bali, but less touristed). It may also be from. A 1-day (24hr/950km) car ride, or a 2.45 hr air plane trip separates these two regions. While there are fine examples of both art and tourist items coming from this part of the world, this one is authentic. Notice the deep rich patina around the chin line. A lessor example can see on the forehead. Holes where the original straps once were are well worn. The bell-curve eye brows are indicative of the region. Multiple layers of paint suggesting this piece was used for several years of annual dance. The carver of this mask was exceptionally skilled. The mask appears to be poking fun at European features i. Give this big/long nose, the character is likely a: Buffoon, Clown or Servant character. An exceedingly rare, antique, ethnographic item! Approximately 5″ (with nose) X 7″ X 9 1/2. Several of my other masks from my collection are for sale. The item “Antique, Ethnographic, Danced Wooden Mask, Lombok Java Indonesia, Topeng Dance” is in sale since Monday, October 26, 2015. While there are fine examples of both art and tourist items coming from this part of the world, this one is authentic. Notice the deep rich patina around the chin line. A lessor example can see on the forehead. A subtle patina can even been seen from the wearer’s lips against the back of the mask’s mouth. Strap for wearing crafted from a used bicycle tire tube… Copper wire since added for display. Old repairs including a triangle section with a rusty nail at the bottom. Multiple layers of paint suggesting this piece was used for several years of annual dance. The hair and head-cover are also extremely indicative of this piece being used, cultural, and authentic. The elongated nose tells us that is of the clown character “Pentul”. Why are clown masks so extra special? Both from the perspective of a collector and from a culture? With relative immunity clowns often act as an unofficial spokesperson for the community… Using parody and humor to ridicule authority and therefore have historically served important roles in their society. The carver of this mask was exceptionally skilled. The mouth of the mask is impressive in its realism. The eyes artistically capture their audience and are 3-dimensional. Mustache has a lovely even ebb and flow. Several of my other masks from my collection are for sale. Check out my other items.
