RARE ANTIQUE Magic Lantern Slide BOSTON MUSEUM C1870 VICTORIAN PHOTO USA MASS. An incredibly rare image of Moses Kimballs museum. I have dated the image between 1860 – 1880 just looking at the location and people (see photo 4 – the womens dress is certainly from this period) however from research I believe the slide was not produced until the 1880’s. Boston Museum and Gallery of Fine Arts. Was a theatre, wax museum, natural history museum, zoo and art museum in 19th Centuary Boston. Established the enterprise in 1841. The Boston Museum exhibited items acquired from Ethan Allen Greenwoods former New England Museum; tableaux of wax figures; live animals; and artworks by John Singleton Copley, Gilbert Stuart, Benjamin West, Thomas Badger and others. Early live shows presented, for instance, the musical olio, consisting of solos on glass bells, and birch-bark whistling. Theatrical performances began in 1843. Through the years, notable performers included: Lawrence Barrett, Edwin Booth, John Wilkes Booth, Annie Clark, Richard Mansfield, E H Southern, Mary Ann Vincent and William Warren. An advertisement of 1850 described the museum’s key attractions. The museum is the largest, most valuable, and best arranged in the United States. It comprises no less than seven different museums, to which has been added the present year, besides the constant daily accumulation of articles, one half of the celebrated Peales Philadelphia Museum, swelling the already immense collection to upwards of half a million articles, the greatest amount of objects of interest to be found together at any one place in America; and an entirely new hall of wax statuary…. And the immense collection of birds, beasts, fish, insects and reptiles… Paintings, engravings and statuary… Family of Peruvian mummies; the duck-billed platypus… The curious half-fish, half-human Feejee Mermaid which P T Barnum later. The Museum held a recruiting office for Company D. Of the 22nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in 1861 at the start of the Civil War. Please see my shop for similar slides. Antique E Howard Boston #11 Wall Regulator Clock Working Order Very Good
Antique E Howard Boston #11 Wall Regulator Clock Working Order Very Good. 11 regulator or keyhole, 8 day, weight driven brass movement wall time piece circa 1874. 13 wide(round face section). 11.5 steel clock face. Very good condition considering its age. The clock face does have a couple of screw holes drilled in. They do not look original to the piece. It looks as if at some point someone reattached the clock face to it using different holes. The clock face does seem original. The latch to the clock face door does work but the latch to the bottom part does not work. Minor scraping to the case, but overall excellent. At the very bottom of the case near the bottom of the pendulum the door does have a split. Looks to be a simple repair. Does not effect the clock. The clock movement is signed as well as stamped with the number 5… Also has the number 15 etched in. Antique Signed Low & Co Boston Weight Banjo Original Glasses
An early Boston weight driven banjo clock, ca. 1832, signed faintly on the dial, Warranted (upper dial) John J. Low & Co / Boston (lower dial). Mahogany case with gilt frames, with interesting egg & dart `rope type’ inlay…. Original glasses (upper has crack). Probable original lead weight, pendulum (bob 2 7/8), sidearms, hand cut hands. Eagle top finial has age, may be original, threaded piece broke in chimney. Upper latch does not close, as threaded last 1/4 of belaying pin broke off. Well made movement with alternate train and deep cut teeth… Single screw rear mounted. Mvmt measures 2 5/8 x 3 15/16. Lowe box measures 9 7/8 x 7 9/16. Clock measures about 29 to top of chimney, w/o finial. A wonderful example in fine, as found condition. I have sent extra pics to 2 requests, and checked the box to send them to the listing for all to see, but that option does not appear to be working – if you need pics of the weight, finial, back of clock, etc. Please ask and ye shall receive.
