Stunning Rare Antique German Black Forest Gk Bahnhausle Railroad Cuckoo Clock
We have a large number of vintage and antique clocks currently listed along with an equally large number of music boxes and other very nice collectibles. Be sure to have a look at our. This is an absolutely breathtaking antique cuckoo clock that was produced about 120 years ago in the Black Forest of Germany by Gebruder Kuner and marketed under their G. It is referred to as a Bahnhausle (Train House) clock or Railroad clock since it was the German railroads who initially commissioned their local manufacturers to create a common design for use in their railroad stations around the 1890’s. The clock was so popular that a few were made for households around the world. This clock is one of the finest I’ve ever seen and it still works quite well here. It is an impressive size too measuring about 17 1/2″ high (from the tip of the leaves on the upper frame to the bottom of the finial on the bottom and not counting the weights or pendulum), about 6 1/2″ or so at its deepest point, and about 13 across the top. The clock is carved from cured and aged Linden wood that is grown nearly exclusively at certain altitudes of the Black Forest. It has a beautiful mahogany finish and features deeply carved fancy fret work hanging from the roof eaves on either side of the case, fancy round finials on the lower frame, an escutcheon on the left eave, another in the middle, and one missing on the right. There is a fancy square carving on the left side of the lower frame and on the right too along with two fancy wooden finials as well. The case is adorned with some of the nicest carvings I’ve seen in ages and 15 deeply carved wooden grape leaves and clusters of grapes near the bottom, both sides, and on the top as well. There is also a large, carved wooden grape leaf on the custom-designed wooden pendulum too. The wooden dial has a black backdrop and features easy to read Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancy hands to point out the time. The numbers are the old style and nailed on to the dial, not glued on. There is a hinged wooden door on either side of the case. These are secured with a metal latch and open easily to allow access to the clock movement should any adjustments ever become necessary from this angle. The clock has a fitted wood back and is secured with a metal latch. The door easily removes to allow access to an early style of a weight driven movement bearing the G. A weight driven movement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to wind the clock and cuckoo activity. The tall wooden bellow whistle tubes are in good shape and the trapezoid tops look and sound good but a bit soft. At the bottom of each hour, a colorful wooden bird with flapping wings opens the small fancy wooden door above the dial and stands in the doorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a nice sounding coiled chime inside the case and when the cuckoo activity is finished, the bird retreats back inside the clock, closing the door behind him. The bird reappears at the top of each hour and correctly cuckoos/chimes the current number of hours before going back inside the clock; fascinating! The clock works quite well here, cuckoos as it should, and keeps good time too. Keep in mind this is an old clock and we do not know the service history though the movement does show signs of having been maintained over the years. Nonetheless, some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock makes the journey to its new home. We always advise our clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will preserve this classic clock and keep it running strong for years to come. The clock comes complete as shown with two sets of attached metal chains, a large carved grape leaf pendulum, and two very heavy pinecone shaped metal weights. I’ve looked the clock over fairly well and noted only modest wear. I did see that one of the finial mounts on the bottom left has a break to it and the leaf on the very top is missing. There is a large chip on the wooden pendulum and hard to see evidence of an old repair here and there but still, it is absolutely gorgeous on display! This clock is one of the finest examples of Black Forest craftsmanship I have seen in a very long time. No matter where you display it in your home or office, it will get noticed for its uniqueness, high quality, and just Wow! You won’t find another quite like it! If you like this item and I’m sure you do, then I know you’ll love the other items. Check back frequently since we’re listing a lot of antique/vintage items as time allows! We’d be glad to send more pictures if available; just ask! My wife and I have been accumulating lots of nice antiques and other collectors items over the years. ALL FABRICS, UNLESS STATED, ARE FIRST QUALITY AND WILL AS ONE CONTINUOUS PIECE. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE FABRIC. HOWEVER, IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A PLAIN BEIGE PIECE OF CLOTH, LOOK ELSEWHERE. THIS IS THE PLACE FOR EXCITING TEXTILES. FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION ARE A PAIR OF CHAIRS COVERED IN FORTUNY’CORONE’ FABRIC. THESE ARE VINTAGE PIECES AND I WOULD GUESS THEY ARE FROM THE 1930s TO 1950s. ONE IS A’GENTLEMEN’S’ CHAIR WHICH IS SLIGHTLY LARGER THAN THE COMPANION’LADIES’ CHAIR. TO MAKE A CHAIR OF SLIGHTLY LARGER SIZE FOR THE GENTLEMAN IN THE FAMILY WAS THE FASHION DURING THE TIME PERIOD. THE STYLES ARE EXACTLY THE SAME, THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS SCALE. THE CHAIRS ARE STRUCTURALLY VERY SOUND AND EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE. THE SECOND PHOTO SHOWS THE GENTLEMEN’S CHAIR. THE THIRD PHOTO SHOWS THE LADIES CHAIR. THEY ARE FULLY UPHOLSTERED TUB CHAIRS. ALL THE TUFTING AND BUTTONS ARE INTACT. THE FOURTH PHOTOS SHOWS A GREAT DETAIL- THE SKIRT IS BANDED WITH THE BORDER OF THE FORTUNY FABRIC – THE FORTUNY’R’. THE FIFTH PHOTO SHOW THE BACK OF THE CHAIR WHICH HAS A LOVELY TAPER. THE SIXTH PHOTO SHOWS ANOTHER DETAIL- THE CORDING AROUND THE CUSHIONS AND THE BACK OF THE CHAIR IS NOT A SELF WELT, BUT A CORD IN COORDINATING COLORS OF WARM PEACH AND A SLIGHT THREAD OF THE PLATINUM COLOR WHICH IS ALMOST IMPERCEPTIBLE, BUT A GREAT DESIGNER DETAIL. THE CORONE FABRIC WAS PLACED JUST SO BY THE UPHOLSTERER- NONE OF THE’CROWN’ OF THE PATTERN IS USED. PERHAPS THE CLIENT REQUESTED THIS TO SUBDUE THE REGAL QUALITY OF THE FABRIC PATTERN AND MAKE IT A BIT MORE APPROACHABLE. CHAIRS OF THIS AGE ARE NEVER WITHOUT ISSUE AND I WILL TRY TO DETAIL THEM HERE. MENTION THESE ISSUES IN THE SPIRIT OF FULL DISCLOSURE, BUT THE CHAIRS ARE LOVELY AS IS AND WOULD COST AN ABSOLUTE FORTUNE TO RECREATE TODAY. VINTAGE FORTUNY FABRIC IS A TREASURE. ADD TO THAT THE HIGH QUALITY OF THESE CHAIRS AND THIS IS A RARE FIND INDEED. AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE FIRST PHOTO, FROM A DISTANCE OF A FEW FEET AWAY THE CHAIRS ARE BREATHTAKING. THE SEVENTH PHOTO SHOWS WHERE THERE IS’BLEED’ TO THE COLORS ON THE CUSHION. PERHAPS THEY RECEIVED TOO AGGRESSIVE A CLEANING AT SOME POINT? THE EIGHTH PHOTO SHOWS THE FABRIC IS A BIT THIN AND SLIGHTLY FRAYED IN A COUPLE AREAS. IT IS, AFTER ALL, A COTTON. THE NINTH PHOTO SHOWS THE LEFT ARM OF THE LADIES CHAIR WHICH SHOWS DISCOLORATION AND WEAR. THE TENTH PHOTO SHOWS A SMALL HOLE ON THE BACK EDGE OF THE LADIES CHAIR. THE ELEVENTH PHOTO SHOWS THAT THE FABRIC IS FADED IN AREAS WHERE IT HAS SEEN SUN. THE PARTS THAT DID NOT SEE SUN SUCH AS THE FABRIC BETWEEN THE PLEATS SHOWS THAT THIS FABRIC HAD A SLIGHT METALLIC QUALITY WHICH HAS FADED. THE TWELFTH PHOTO SHOWS THE SKIRT HAS PLEATS WHICH’COME AWAY’ FROM THE BUTTONS. THE BUTTONS ARE STILL THERE AND I SUSPECT AN UPHOLSTERER OR A RELATIVELY HANDY PERSON CAN FIND A WAY TO AFFIX THE FABRIC TO STAY BEHIND THE BUTTON TO MAKE THE PLEAT LAY BETTER. THE GENTLEMAN’S CHAIR MEASURES 34 INCHES HIGH AND 36 INCHES WIDE AT THE WIDEST POINT. THE LADIES CHAIR MEASURES 32 INCHES HIGH AND 34 INCHES WIDE. FABRICS WILL ARRIVE FOLDED AND WILL REQUIRE PRESSIN G. The item “STUNNING Pair Vintage Fortuny Chairs Upholstered Corone Fabric Down Fill Tufted” is in sale since Tuesday, September 27, 2016.
