Antique C&B Hard Candy Taffy Knocker Machine Pillow Mint Maker Cast Iron Mold
Antique C&B Candy Knocker. This machine was made in the last part of the 19th century (likely 1880s). I believe it was made by the Confectionary and Bakers Supply company of Chicago. It is cast iron design with brass accent pieces and steel blades. It is also very heavy, weighing 40 pounds. The machine itself without handle is 11 tall, 12 wide and 9 1/2 deep. The blades are each 2 3/4 wide, 5/8 deep at their deepest tapering down to 3/8 at the edge of the blades, and separated by about 1 at their widest point. Condition: everything appears to function as it should. Screws, bolts and adjustable parts are not seized and can be maneuvered as needed. The lower cutting gear is missing 2 teeth (about 180 degrees apart on the wheel), but does not affect the functionality the machine – please see pictures. I have cranked the machine hundreds of times with no issue from this. The rod that holds the brass spinning knocker/finial (not sure its technical name but its the part that rotates at the front and spits the candy to one side) is slightly bent resulting in a minute elliptical spin instead of a perfectly spherical one – when I acquired the machine this caused the spinner to ever so slightly catch on the teeth, but I removed the bolt and rotated the knocker 90 degrees and it was not an issue after (I think one of the spinning arms is a mm wider than the other). If you take the machine apart and dont put it back just as it was you will have to play with it or grind a minute amount off the one blade that was catching. The machine will require a cleaning before use. There is minimal surface rust to the roller beds that press the candy between the blades. I do not clean antiques before I sell them, but it will clean up nicely. There is some pitting to the steel parts as well. The cast iron was repainted silver at some point in its life. There is rust to the underside of the base. It has wear throughout as to be expected with an item that is over 100 years old and likely saw lots of use.
